About the Joint ESAs Consumer Protection Days
The ESAs - the European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) - have a leading role in promoting transparency, simplicity and fairness in the market for consumer financial products and services across the internal market. Their main tasks include contributing to the protection of consumers across the EU; collecting, analysing and reporting on consumer trends in the EU; reviewing and coordinating financial literacy and education initiatives; developing training standards for the industry; contributing to the development of common disclosure rules, and monitoring existing and new financial activities.
To that end, the ESAs develop their requirements jointly with the 28 national authorities competent for banking, insurance and securities sectors, in the form of binding EU law and other legal requirements that are applicable in all EU Member States.
With the goal of strengthening cooperation and ensuring cross-sectoral consistency between the ESAs, a forum established on 1 January 2011 known as the Joint Committee of the ESAs, organise every year the 'Joint ESAs Consumer Protection Day'. The event aims at bringing together, from all over Europe, leaders of consumer/investor organisations, industry, national regulators, EU institutions as well as academics and other key market participants, to discuss issues related to consumer and investor protection and financial innovation.
