Consumer Protection Day 2016

European Supervisory Authorities’ host 4th Consumer Protection Day

The Joint Committee of the European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) held its 4th “Joint ESAs Consumer Protection Day” on 16 September in Paris and livestreamed the event for the first time to reach a wider audience. You can watch a recording of the event here.

Gabriel Bernadino, Chairman of EIOPA and the current Chairman of the Joint Committee, opened the day’s events with a welcome address and Oliver Guersent, Director General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union at the European Commission, gave the keynote speech.

The remainder of the day was devoted to three panels of distinguished guests who discussed some of the key topics facing consumers and regulators today:

  • whether the EU has a truly European market for retail financial services yet, looking in particular at the EU passporting regime for financial products and services;
  • how Big Data is revolutionising the way products and services are marketed; and
  • challenges for supervision, as new EU consumer protection requirements on information for retail consumers, sales incentives and the remuneration of sales staff, are about to enter into force

Consumer and investor protection is a common statutory objective of the three ESAs - the European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA). The Joint ESAs Consumer Protection Day aims to gather consumers, regulators and industry participants together to discuss consumer protection-related issues in the financial services area.
